Our Mission at Taino Farm

Sustainable agriculture and aquaponics in the Dominican Republic

Taino Farm is an educational center for demonstrating permaculture-inspired agrotourism. The Farm is located at the tropical river “Rio Yasica” outside the town of Cabarete in the Dominican Republic, which is known for its surfing, kite- and windsurfing.

Our goal is to inspire, educate and show people how to live in harmony with nature and produce
sustainable healthy food.

We are self-sufficient with over 100 different fruit trees, a large aquaponics system, a vegetable garden, chickens, a worm farm for compost production and our own bee colonies.

Vision: To promote growth in our community, environment and society through sustainable agriculture.

Mission: empower the community to develop a small paradise, employ locals and educate all stakeholders and interested parties.

Families

We are an international group consisting of more than 10 families. We took over the Taino Farm Project in 2020 with the vision of creating a paradise in which we can live in harmony with and from the nature. Values like tolerance, respect, family as well as a healthy lifestyle are very important to us. We want to inspire other people to live more self-conscious and to contribute by showing and teaching how to cultivate and produce healthy and resource preserved groceries. We are aware that due to our origin we are privileged. That is why we want to give something back to the people who welcomed us so warmly. Six days a week all of us – including our team and guests enjoy lunch together. Subsequently we teach an hour of Spanish and English.

Team

Our philosophy also includes employing a long-term team of employees. This is only possible through mutual respect and trust. During our common lunch and the following English- Spanish lessons we exchange our experiences on a daily basis.

Eco tourism

We offer half-day farm tours as well as several huts for renting in the jungle. You have the possibility to immerse yourself into the life on a Dominican farm, to experience how healthy food is produced and to try them directly from the tree or field or at our farm lunch. In the center are sustainability, authenticity and a boatload of fun.

Aquaponics

With 10 tanks consisting of 300 Tilapia fish each and four big greenhouses with mint and spinach our Aquaponic System is one of the largest and most advanced in the Dominican Republic. Study everything about Aquaponic as an intern or visit our facility during a half-day tour.

Nursery

We have over 100 fruit trees in two different fruit orchards constructed according to the permaculture principle. Approximately 50 we currently offer for sale at our nursery. Here you can see which ones.

Internship

An important part of our mission is to implement the thought of a sustainable way of life, pass on our knowledge and to make it accessible to as many people as possible. Become part of the team and enquireabout an internship today.

Garden

Our two vegetable gardens only have been erected a few months ago. In time it is our goal to newly create it according to the permaculture principle. Neither in the gardens, nor the fruit orchards, or the aquaponic facilities do we use chemical based pesticides or fertilizers. The majority of the vegetables processed in the kitchen originate from our own production. Our current offer.

Bees

A healthy farm of course consists of healthy bee colonies. Currently 6 of them live on the Taino Farm. To keep our bees happy we are constantly planting new flowers and their gratitude is shown to us by rewarding us with the most delicious honey.

Animals

Currently we live on the farm with 4 dogs, dozens of chickens, several thousand Tilapia basses and a horse named Nemo.

Worms

The soil in the tropics is not as nutritious as often assumed. Due to the great amount of rain it is eroded and mostly quite austere. As we naturally do not use chemical based fertilizer we count on worm earth. For production we have to worm houses which you can visit during a farm tour. You want to learn how to build and run a worm house? Sign up for an internship.
